academician

academician
Either an elected member of an academy, or an artist who follows the principles of the traditional and conservative academic tradition. Adolphe-William Bouguereau (French, 1825-1905) was an archetypal academician. Bouguereau was immensely successful and influential as an exponent of academic art, upholding traditional values and contriving to exclude avant-garde work from the Salon.
